Double for Purnima; Five medals for Odisha

A 16-member Orissa squad bagged five medals in the 27th National Junior Athletics Championship, which was held at Birsa Munda Sports Complex, Ranchi (Jharkhand) from Nov 1 to 4, 2011. The medals included three gold, one silver and one bronze.

Purnima Hembram (DOB 10-7-93) clinched a creditable double by winning gold medals in girls-20 heptathlon with a total of 4742 points and the 100m hurdles with a timing of 14.49 seconds. Dutee Chand (DOB 3-2-96) won the third gold in 100m sprint (Girls-16), clocking 12.19 seconds.

Jambeswar Panda (DOB 4-10-98) won a silver in boys-14 shot put event, throwing the iron ball to a distance of 13.60 metres. Champa Tirkey (DOB 7-3-96) secured the bronze in 100m hurdles (Boys-16), taking 14.43 seconds. Odia athlete Namita Kabat won the girls-20 800m gold for Jharkhand, clocking 2:19.47 seconds.
